TMI was incorporated in Malaysia under the Companies Act, 1965 of Malaysia, on June 12, 1992 as a private limited company under the name Telekom Malaysia International Sdn Bhd and commenced business in 1994. On October 16, 2001, the company changed its name to TM International Sdn Bhd. Further, on December 12, 2007, the company was converted into a public company.

It was listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia on the 28 April 2008. TMI is among the top ten biggest public limited companies in Malaysia by market capitalisation, and the first listed pan-Asian pure cellular service provider in the region.

The Group, including subsidiaries and associates, has 40 million mobile subscribers in Asia, putting it among the largest mobile telecommunication providers in the region by turnover. The Group has approximately 13,000 people under employment in ten countries. On a pro-forma basis, it recorded turnover of RM9,997 million and net profit after tax of RM1,634 million for the financial year ended 31 December 2007.
The Group brings technology, network expansion capabilities and massive investments in financial and human resources to ensure that its investments generate the maximum benefits for its subsidiaries and shareholders. It also intends to continue focussing on growing its existing market share while expanding into targeted new markets in the South and Southeast Asian regions.
